Kevin's Confession, Part 1

Full Story

Still 2 months ago.
Tasha is completely moved into 227N.
She and Kevin work on some finishing touches.
While Anthony works on being annoying.

Tasha sets up her gaming system as Kevin hangs up a decoration. Anthony, helpful as ever, decides his best course of action is to fill his belly while commenting on their work. "Did you connect that right?" He asks Tasha while maintaining a hold on his pizza.

Kevin asks a question of his own. "Why don't you stop eating and give us a hand here?"
With fried rice firmly in his grasp, Anthony responds, "You have your priorities and I have mine."
"Yeah, your stomach!" Tasha grumbles out.

Kevin is teaching Tasha proper fire place maintenance when Anthony wonders aloud, "You know what you're doing?"
"Just drink your soda."
"Pfft, fine with me."

The hard workers finally stop and rest and ask Anthony about his upcoming military training. Kevin wants to know, "You gonna be gone long this time?" While Tasha's concern is, "And should we be worried?"
"No worries necessary, kid and I'll be back before you know it."

It's time for Anthony to head out and Kevin gives him a handshake. "Thanks for the assist, man."
"You know I got you." Turning to Tasha, Anthony demands, "Gimmie a hug, twerp." She readily complies. "Give my boy a chance, alright?"
Kevin silently gasps at his words while Tasha pulls back in surprise. "Huh? Give who what?"
Kevin inwardly steams, "Oh, this jerk."
Knowing he'd sufficiently riled them both, Anthony leaves with a parting shot. "Just remember what I said. Later!"

"Okaaaay," Tasha drawled, "What was that about?"
"Heh, who knows?" Kevin lied nervously. "You look really tired. Why don't you..."
"Nope. Stop right there."
"Stop what? I was just gonna..."
"Forget it, mister. Something is going on. So please just tell me already," Tasha implored.
Kevin sighs, "You're right. Have a seat and I'll get us a drink."

Because he's taking an obviously long time to choose a drink, Tasha suspiciously asks, "Are you stalling over there or what?"
Finally returning with sodas, he hands one to her. "No more stalling. Here."
"Thanks."

Kevin begins, "Do you remember when we first met?"
"Of course!" Tasha exclaims. "I was a sweet, shy 5 year old and you were a slightly smelly 11 year old with a very funky attitude." She reminisces the event.

Tasha's mother tries to introduce the 5 year old to her new brother. "It's okay, baby. Say hello." Turning her face into her mother's leg, young Tasha thinks, "I'm too shy," and refuses to speak.

Back in the real world, Kevin scoffs, "Heh. I love how you rewrite history. Sweet and shy? Please." Kevin recalls the meeting more accurately.

"Mama says you're my brother now. My friend Nina say lil' brothers are sucky," Young Tasha laments.
"Tasha!" Her mother sharply reprimands.
"Sorry. But you're big so I guess it's okay," Tiny Tasha reasons and then motions to Kevin, "You can pick me up now!" Secured in his arms she sniffs him noisily. "You smell funny."
"Tasha!"
"Sorry. But I'll get used to it."

Memory over, adult Kevin agrees that, "You were right about the attitude though. Dad and I never got along. When he introduced you guys and declared we were a family - let's just say I didn't take it well. I tried real hard to resent you and your mom but you both worked your way into my heart."
"Awww. Same here, Kevin."
"Maybe not quite the same."
"Huh?" Tasha leans back. "What do you mean?"
"This will be hard for you to understand and it's just as hard for me to say, but please hear me out."
Tasha silently nods.
"I, uh...," Kevin starts. "The thing is..." He stops. "I'm....," He pauses.
Seeing him struggle, Tasha soothes, "Kevin, it's okay. I think I know what you want you want to say."
"You do?!" He exclaims surprised.
"Uh huh. I've suspected for a long time that... that you're gay! And that's totally okay."
"Whoa, what?! No, I'm not! Why would you even... What?!"
"Oh, Kevin." She says wryly and thinks, "It's just so obvious." She begins to list the reasons for her suspicion. "You haven't had a girlfriend in forever. You only hang around other dudes. You're always at the gym. I mean, always," she stresses.
Kevin hangs his head. "Oh geeze. This isn't happening."
Feeling she's 100% right Tasha insists, "You can admit it. You know I'll support you." Getting an idea in her head she loudly gasps, "Oh! Have you met someone special? Is that why you're coming out? Awww. That's so sweet!"
"Tasha," Kevin implored solemnly. "Listen to me. I'm not gay and I'm not in love with some dude." With a slight pause he powers through. "I am in love though." Gently raising a hand to her face he finishes, "I'm in love with you."
Tasha blinks at him momentarily, positive she'd heard him wrong. Pushing his hand away from her cheek she softly says, "Uhm. You..." She starts again and simply queries. "Say what?"

  1. The video stalled two minutes in but I am already blown away. Your characters are well-developed with clear motivations. Their gestures and words express their "through lines" perfectly.

The dialogue advances the action and enhances the characterization. Thanks for putting it in the speech bubbles and making it large enough to read easily. You also placed all the speech bubbles strategically so that they clearly emanate from the character who is speaking but don't obscure the rest of the scene.

The photography is outstanding. The shots are well-lit and artfully composed. I like the way that you shot sequences that add a bit of animation even though most of the images are stills.

The set is marvelously detailed and the well thought out design further expresses Tasha's character. I have appreciated the tutorials you have shared as you were building the set. I hope you will also share some of your video production process. What software did you use to edit the piece and put in the speech bubbles?

You have definitely raised the bar on doll videos. Thank you for a very bright start to my day!

    1. Limbe Dolls what a great compliment, thank you so very much! I knew some people would have a hard time with the video's length and I tried so hard to shorten it. I tested a read through and thought it would come in at 4.5 minutes. I totally forgot to factor in scene set ups and transitions. I was going to shorten it anyway but then it would have ended with him saying he was going to get sodas and that was a lame stopping point.

I'll start taking some how to shots so I can do a video production post while I work on finishing Part 2 of Kevin's story. It will be awhile though so in the meantime, I use Windows Movie Maker to make the video and Photoshop 7 to add the speech bubbles.

      Thanks again!

  3. Hehe, way to go, Kevin... hopefully, after the shock, it will be well received.

Those backstory pics were adorable... and thank you so much for writing it out too, for those of us unable to watch the video :)

I can't wait to see more, what great characters!

    1. Hey there, Mustiwait! The Windows Movie Maker is free and I've been using Photoshop 7 for 10 years so I'm not sure it's readily available. Something like Photoshop Elements might work but I don't know if it does speech bubbles.

Kevin is one of the nicer Power Team guys. He's very expressive.

    1. Thanks, William! I put a bunch of work into the set and video so it's awesome to see the finished product come together - even if it takes forever to get done.

  7. So much awesomeness. The set, the photopraphy, all very well done. The backstory was great to see, but it was also a little creepy seeing their size difference back then. It was also great seeing all of your many projects come together in the set.

    1. Hi, Vanessa! It was a little creepy but I had to make do, lol. I was going to use a High School Musical guy since they are so short, but when I tried to take his head off I was afraid he was gonna crack so I ended up using Liv Jake instead.

  8. Hello from Spain: the hammer is very real. I like the food. I also like to see these guys working in the apartment. I like the dialogue when they remember when they met. Congratulations for creating this awesome video. It's a great job. Keep in touch

  9. Wow Muff, this was an amazing video! I got all giddy for Tasha. It's not an easy situation but it really brings up how something that could be meant to be, doesn't always come wrapped in a pretty bow. I'm interested to see the next episode. Everything looks amazing by the way. :)

  11. Hi again Muff,

Today my WiFi is working better and I was able to see the whole thing. My original comment was not against the length of the piece. Now that I have seen the whole thing I am even more impressed than I was yesterday.

For those who don't have and can't afford Photoshop, you can download Gimp for free. It does pretty much everything Photoshop does and the interface looks about the same.

Thanks again for a great story!

  12. I love the video and I can appreciate the time and energy that went into it! I don't think it was too long to look at, I just know how long it takes to produce each minute of video and I say Bravo! It is a great story. You have upped the bar on videos. The details in the room looked good in photos and looked even better in the video! I couldn't get the video to play on your page. That might be my system fault but I saw it just fine on youtube. I liked the head nod. How did you get the timing right for that section? I have struggles with the speech bubbles size and getting it big enough but not losing the detail of the surroundings. I found yours spot on! Great Job! I would love to know some detail on making the video! I can't wait until the next one!

P.S. I just read limbe doll's comments. I totally agree! I have been figuring out things as I go and it hasn't gone as well as I would have like to seen.

    1. Hi, Ms. Leo and thanks! I too have a hard time viewing Youtube videos on people's pages so I always include a direct link. I guess I'm missing some sort of plugin, but I don't know.

Trial and error is how I got the head nod, lol. I was trying to do some stop motion and had to abandon a bit of footage because I couldn't get it edited properly. When I do my video production post I'll give exact specs for how some stuff was done. Maybe with the next video I'll be able to perfect some things and give better info.

  13. Wow! This was good! I burst into laughter when Tasha told Kevin he was gay. Not that that's funny, but the fact that she thought that's what he wanted to tell her was hilarious! Then the way she continued to convince him she knew this to be true was even funnier. This was so freaking good.

I loved the flashback scenes and the other special effects during their conversations. Their movements were so believable. This had to be quite difficult to produce.

Muff, you have become quite the professional videographer and storyteller. I am quite impressed! Can't wait for part 2.

    1. Thanks, Debbie! I would say that it's more time consuming than it is difficult. In general I always have to try different tactics to see what works best for me, and in doing so, I inevitably waste a ton of time. I'm improving some of my shooting techniques but it's just a long process regardless.

Part 2 should be released a lot quicker than Part 1 - *crosses fingers*

  14. Wow Muff! Awesome! I didn't know they were step siblings! Semi-incest! I love a good scandal. When Tasha was "coming out" FOR him, I was cracking up! I wonder how she will react! I look forward to part 2.

    1. Hiya, Vita! Maybe I just have a wonky point of view, but if you're not blood related then I don't have a problem with people hooking up - but that's just me, lol.

They are indeed step siblings AND Kevin's dad later adopted her as well. Tasha's mom, however did not adopt Kevin since he was practically a teenager by then. I started this story butt backwards, so I'm having to establish the background as I go along.

  16. What a great video - I can't wait for part 2. I must admit I also laughed at Tasha trying to convince Kevin he was gay and at the different memories of what really happened when they first met. What makes it even funnier for me is that I recently had to make dresses for a wedding that was exactly like this situation - they were a step-brother and sister getting married (only they were both older when they first met) and even more interestingly, the bride had both her mother and her step-mother as her bridesmaids.

    1. Hi, Carrickters! I'm pretty sure that Tasha knew good and well that her memory of events was completely false, even if she was a little kid at the time. She seems the sassy type from birth to me.

I know that in some cultures relations via marriage are considered as sacrosanct as those by blood. But heck, I'm from a culture that has the phrase, "Kissing Cousins." I find it more interesting that your client had her mother and step mother in the wedding, lol.

  20. Applause. Could not get right to it, but when I did, the video and story blew me away. Wow! I would like them to get together - Kevin and Tasha. Not sure if that will happen with Tasha thinking that he is gay. Oops, guess that got the truth from him though, lol.

Love the flashback scene and how each of the two characters recalled their first meeting. I don't mean to favor the guy, but I think I'll trust Kevin's version a little more. From another self-proclaimed "shy" person - lol.

Love Anthony too. You have fascinating characters, beautifully clear photography, and a charming setting.

    Go, Muff, Doll Storyteller!

    1. What an awesome comment, Dana! Yes, I have my doubts about you self proclaimed shy people, lol. Just about every actor says they were super shy when they were kids.

To bad I cant shoot everything in the white haze of a flashback. It would save a ton of time on making sets.
