And This Is Why...

I'm always hesitant about buying dolls sight unseen.  Target has their Stardolls for $14.99 and I thought about finally getting one.  I like some of their fashions, but I'm not really feeling a connection to their faces or eye paint.  So, I was fine with getting just one and then taking a risk that I might be able to score the others later on down the line for $10 or less.  If I snooze and lose, so be it.

Since I'm partial to redheads and I love the outfit she's wearing, this one was a real contender.  However, every single one of her had a defect.  Out of five dolls there, they all either had wonky eyes or the lashes were jacked up!  Quality control was completely lacking when they manufactured this batch. E-yuck.

In the end I didn't get any at all.  Seeing this one all messed up totally bummed me.  So, once again, I am Stardoll-less.  Oh, well.

  2. Awww that sucks. If it makes you feel any better, I am also stardoll-less, as I have also not connected with any of them.

    1. Verona, I really think it's the eyes that make me not gung ho on them. They seem weirdly static.

  3. QC needs to get it together! Lol! She would have been a great choice. She is pretty and so is her dress. I feel that they will go down eventually in cost. I only have one of them.

  5. I totally agree! Every time I pick one up and look at it, I put it right back down! I am not impressed with them at all. I shall remain star doll less until they become really really cheap! Love those accessorie packs though lol!

  7. I agree about the QC for Mattel dolls. Lots of times, you get the feeling that there is no such area as QC.

I lucked out with the StarDolls that I bought. There were several with clumpy eyelashes or wonky eyes. That's why I - like you Muff - prefer to buy dolls in person. So that I can see what I am getting or NOT getting.

    1. Hi D7ana, I just think it sucks that they would even put that out on the market. I know they are manufactured in another country, but you'd think they would be inspected again when they hit the States, so that Mattel knows they are getting what they paid for.

  8. I just purchased her and mine doesn't have that issue. After seeing your post, I went back and looked at mine really well. I noticed one little area of the end of the lashes but not a big deal. I can trim it. Eversince the second line of Basics there has been real shotty QC. Is this why the doll are being discounted? What is Mattel saying other that the offer to replace it? Maybe they shouldn't have done lashes! It is time for a new company to have dolls availble to store doll buyer. That is the only way Mattel will clean up it's act!

BTW, I do love her clothing! All the othe dolls have nice outfits but the AA version.

    1. Hiya Ms. Leo! It's true that I'm super cheap, but things like this just make me more willing to wait until I can find dolls at their lowest price. I'm a very picky person by nature, but I don't think it's too much to ask that they produce a product that's well done and worth its price point.

  9. I think they are trying to save as much money as they can and most of these playline dolls end up with young children who don't notice small details that adult collectors look for. It's cheaper fr them to replace some dolls (or issue vouchers). When they sold Frankie for $4.13 on April 13th I was amazed at the number of people who just grabbed some Frankies off the shelf and walked away without even looking the dolls over. I was there first and looked over the 30+ dolls and MANY of them had messed up face paint.

I think it's wrong that a $20+ doll has such poor quality control but it's a sign of the economic times. :\ The one good thing about being picky about face paint and hair is that it has saved me a good chunk of money, I've left a lot of dolls on the shelves because they didn't pass my QC. :)

  10. Oh wow, that's awful looking. Yeah, I'm one of those QC people too, who has to look through every box and pic the most perfect one, and if none of them are any good, none of them get bought.

I know it's a whole "play line" thing... but as someone said, these are still $20 dolls, they aren't cheap... and not only that, but not all kids are the same. If I were a kid and got that doll, it would drive me NUTS that her eyelashes were all messed up.

    1. Heather, I agree that some kids are just as discretionary as adults. I wasn't into Barbies when I was a kid but I was definitely nitpicky about every other little thing.

  12. Wow, that was pretty bad. She is the only Stardoll I have. I just went and looked at her again, and mine has a perfect paint and lash job. I bought her from BC.com. My $20 coupon was about to expire, so I just paid the cost of shipping for her. I do love that dress! Oddly enough, I have never received a doll in the mail that didn't have a good paint job. Let me find some wood to knock on.

    1. Vanessa, you have been lucky at getting only good paint jobs in the mail. Maybe the retailers inspect them before they send them out???
