Well, Flock You Too!

(^__^).  I was in Joann's yesterday and they are having a clearance on this flocking set:

Originally priced at $24.99 but now reduced to $5.97.  I've been wanting to try flocking for a long time and the price was right!

I know that you are supposed to paint the head the color of the flock you are using, but I wasn't going to waste the black flock while I was testing it out.  I wanted to see what the flock would look like with flesh or an opposing color underneath so her head is black in the front and sides and unpainted in the top and back. I didn't thin my mod podge.  I just glopped it on evenly but thickly.

All dry now. You can definitely see whatever the undercolor is.  However, this means that you can affect the color of the flock by what base color you use.  Good to know.

In [Em'lia's Tutorial] she added a second coat so I tried that too.  This time I wasn't as careful putting the glue on and it's all streaky from the brush I used. Tsk, sloppy.

I actually don't see that a second coat made that much difference.  Could be the flock is thin or my glue was too thick.  Either way, I still like it! I could see some multiple ways to use this stuff and the variety of colors appeal to me.

Joann's is also having a sale on single sheet scrapbook paper, 3 sheets for $.99, normally $.59 each.  Sale ends 2/23/13.  If you've been wanting some of those sheets that look like a brick wall, they've got 'em.  I stocked up!

  1. Wow Muff, that color is striking! I know it was only a test color but I actually quite like it on her! The curls are cute :)
If you're a real optimist you could just say that those streaks are meant to be there. They don't even look that bad.

    1. Tali, I know! I was surprised how cute the green looked and it was the color I liked the least while in the bottle.

    1. Jay, that doll's been done and redone and she's been a trooper. I have a limited number of black ladies so I don't want to mess one up when I finally finish all this testing.

      This flock is the ish!

    1. Thanks, Mustiwait! They did have a lot of variety with the photoreal sheets. I also got some that looks like grass. I'm going to try another Joanns to see what they have in stock.

  4. I haven't seen any flock set being sold here, yours look great. And despite the green colour, I love the effect it creates, I think it would look perfect on some of my kens...

    1. Rossetti, this is the first flock set I've ever noticed. When I looked for them at Michaels they came in larger individual bottles, but no black which is what I wanted.

    1. You're welcome, Verona. I know that you can buy flock online, but I always like to see stuff first if I can.

  6. So cute! I tried Em'lia's suggestion of covering the head with little glue dots to simulate a sort of unkept short 'fro, but he ended up looking like he had a head full of warts or something. Super creepy.

    1. LOL, Vita, but that does give me some ideas on flocking styles to try. To see if I can make some bantu knots or something.

    1. IHime, I have this RestoreDoll.com link in my favorites as one to buy flock online from, but I have never used the company so I don't know if they are any good.

    2. But I have and they are flawless. It's the international shipping rates that's keeping me away. I mean, they do have fair rates, but international is always more than going to a local shop, right? ;)

  8. Muff, I love it! Yes, it is an interesting color for hair, but you did a great job on flocking her. I especially love the curls. I can't wait to see what you do with the black. I know it will be awesome. How did you get the hair lines so neat and clean cut? What did you use to clean up the face after flocking?

P.S. Girl, I love your title! Lol!

    1. Hiya, Georgia Girl. The first time I applied the glue with a stiff pointed brush that has been glued together so the bristles don't move. I put a glob of glue in the center and spread it outward toward the edges of the hair line. When it came time for the curls I used the tip of the brush and dabbed small points to fill in the curls.

It gave great coverage and was pretty precise but I felt like I was taking too long to put the glue on so next time I used a flat brush that had loose bristles. It was faster, but I think it was worse and made all those streaks.

When she was dry both times I blowed on her really hard with my breath and then used a dry brush to sweep the flock away.

    1. LOL, Sergio! Now that you say that, she does have some Joesphine Baker type hair.

I don't see why you couldn't use flock for making beards or even eyebrows for that matter.
