Things I Didn't Buy

This 2009 clothing set was in the clearance section at Walmart. You are getting a nice glare free photo because the top cover was gone. I could see that all the pieces were there so I was all set to buy it anyway, but it scanned for $11.00!  No way, man. That's only .99 cents cheaper than the Barbie 3 piece sets. That's not a bargain.

Another Walmart clearance for $15.00. I quite like their outfits and shoes and I'm always a fan of long sleeves for my Monster bodies.  If the dolls had been articulated then I would have been more prone to get this. I just don't want to spend that much on stiff bodies. Also, I don't think Walmart understands how clearance is supposed to work!  This stuff still costs too much.

Walmart $16.97. I think this is the first playset I've seen (or noticed) for La Dee Da. I'm going to admit that I have a bit of haterade for La Dee Da because Spin Master usurped Liv for them. Usually I turn my nose at all things Dee Da and go "Hrmph!"  This definitely caught my eye, not because of the design necessarily, but because SM has made some nice sets in the past so I wanted to check it out. It looks quite garish on the cover but in actuality, it's completely white so you can decorate it how you want.  I'm not the hearts and flowers type, but I can see the potential.

Walmart $10.97.  I can't handle the coloring, but I do rather like the corrsetted chair.  Repaint it in black and white and you'll have some french maid action. However, now that I'm looking at the photo, I can't tell if the chair pulls out. It's got to, right? It must, otherwise what's the point of a doll vanity?

Walmart; either $10.97 or $17.97.  This is something I would buy at Target for 50% off.  The bows are turning me off.  A fridge does not need bows, people. Not even a pink one.

Walmart $39.97. The exterior of this is perfection to me. I like the white, the hub caps, the inlaid lights... if only the inside was a different color.  Still, if Target clearances it out, I would be willing to pay $15 bucks for this.  It's not as sweet as the Mini Cooper but it's darn cute. Not $40 cute though.

Target $17.99. I don't play Angry Birds so can't say I'm a fan. I think this is their first character licensed line that I don't care for.  I liked the Paul Frank stuff and some of the Disney items. Maybe I would think it was cool if I played the game.  As it is, I only like the red pants, but I'm not buying a whole doll just for some red pants.

There was quite a lot of new things out that caught my fancy, but other than buying 2 of the new Ken fashions my money stayed in my pocket.

  1. The LIV fashions are nice.

The Barbie fridge and vanity are on sale at Shopmattel.com along with other Barbie items as reported on my BDC Dolls For Sale Blog.
The vanity chair does pull out.

    1. Those are good prices, DBG! You have to buy multiple items though, otherwise the shipping and handling can double the cost of a single item.

    1. Wow, Marta. That seems super expensive for the Fiat and I thought $40 was too much.

    1. Sergio, is yours pink inside too? If I have to modify it then I'll take a chance on finding one local because the shipping cost between us is pretty huge for something that size.

    2. Yes, is pink inside. I would be happy if it gone to a friend :-(
Doesn't matter, thank you the same

  5. Barbie does seem to be on quite the kick, aren't they?
I mean, we all get that their color is pink... but dude. Variety. Spice of life and all that. Plus... Barbie has friends, doesn't she? I mean, I can't believe Ken is cool living his life with pink glasses on.

I don't know, I think lately they've (Mattel) really been over-using certain things. The color pink in ALL of their furniture/vehicles, for one... and second... the designs for the Fashion Packs. I swear, the only two things I've bought lately are the Raincoat set (I wanted the boots and the t-shirt, mostly) and the Horseback riding set (again, interesting boots and cute t-shirt). All of it has just been looking the same to me. Pink and covered in sparkles. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I'm all for that... but every time? Noooooooooooo!!!!!

A friend of mine who is the froofiest, most lolita, sparkle lover said the other day, in regards to Barbie fashion packs as of late: "You know, I never thought I'd say it, but I'm sick of sparkles." ... now *THAT* is when I know that Mattel really needs to inject some new blood into their clothing design.

I've found Walmart clearance to be a very bumpy ride, LOL, sometimes it's amazing, and other times it's about 5 cents cheaper than normal price. Very odd.

Of course, coming from a store that wouldn't sell my brother a video game because they insisted he wasn't old enough, even though what they were using as evidence wasn't his driver's license, but a sticker on their counter that hadn't been replaced since the year before... well... we probably shouldn't expect too much XD

Christie: Oooh, the Fiat is lovely! And... a MINICOOPER?????? I'm going to have to look into getting myself one of those!

    1. Heather, although I don't have any, I have seen the Mattel sets from yesteryear and everything was not over the top pink. I know that is their signature color and I appreciate that a humongous percentage of little girls prefer pink, probably because they were told they do, but agreed, some variety would be nice.

LOL, you and your friend are right! Sparkles are getting out of control as well.

  6. Barbie fridge is ridiculous- these bows -__-
I don't know what designers had on their mind while making Barbie sets- amount of pink colour is lethal.
I found Liv's clothing set really cute and interesting, but it's rather pricey, better wait for a real discount.
Guess, that you could be disappointed, but it's better to ait and sepnd your money on something really nice.

    1. LOL, MM. I don't mind the bows on the chair because it's part of the corrsetted design, but bows on a fridge - as you say, ridiculous.

  7. IDk though maybe Me personally would have bought the liv pack but only because Liv stuff is really scarce now. Its a shame on SM for replacing them with li dee dee crap or whatever they call it. Hopefully barbie can make a few life adjustments when she moves from Malibu cause all that pink now is just to overwhelming. Ugh! These prices and all this pink I tell you is really for the (angry)Birds! pun intended!!

    1. Jay, Liv has some very nice, well made clothing. However, since it was open, I could tell that the material in this early pack was pretty thin and threadbare. I wasn't flush with cash that day so I didn't want to risk spending it on something that was going to come apart on me.

  8. I liked the Liv fashion set the best, I really fancy Liv fashions, I think they are better finished and designed than Barbie's. The Barbie furniture sets are too much pink, and the bows on the fridge is not understandable at all... You made the best decision in leaving those things!

    1. LOL, Rossetti. It's more like I left them there because I'm super cheap. Most of the items interested me, but not enough to part with my money.

  9. I don't remember the Liv fashion pak. That is cool that you can find them. They are no where to be found here. I love the vanity set. I plan to get it one day. The fridge is cute, but the bows were a turn off. I am hoping that the Fuat goes on sale. I ended getting the Mini Cooper for$15...that was 1/2 off.

    1. Georgia Girl, Target usually has a pretty good sale or clearance on those Barbie sets so I like to wait and see on those things. I got my Mini Cooper on sale like that too, so I hope they do the same with the Fiat. I made a little parking structure so I have room for it, lol.

  10. I've found the secret with clearance & markdowns somewhat. I know that with clearance the best prices seem to be after the xmas holiday. I bought that LIV set on clearance at Target for $7.48. After their holiday clearance most stores start to mark the items up again..go figure. They can keep all the pink fru fru stuff. I have lots of furniture and accessories from the Pre-Pink days :O)

The car is cute but $40 they can keep it. I have at least 6 vehicles including a tour bus that I hardly use now LOL. That Mattel sale may be worth checking out. I can see repainting that washer & dryer on DBG's link.

    1. $7.48, Dollz4Moi?! Now that is more like it! I hope I can catch it if it gets that low.

See, when my Target's do a clearance they chuck the stuff that doesn't sale. Walmart just puts it back on the shelf and raises the price up.

  11. I'm amazed your Wal-Mart has any Liv stuff. Ours got rid of what they had ages ago. Watch that clearance section closely, after checking up almost daily on our clearance last year I managed to wander in while the staff was marking everything down to $2-$5 in the selection of dolls they'd been trying to unload for almost the original prices back in August.

    2. Presto, I'm going to keep an eye out for any clearance stuff. My Walmart has been trickling out the old, original Liv sets so I'm trying to snatch those I can - that are priced right, of course. ^__^

  12. It's a good thing you don't live in Australia - our Barbie prices are closer to Marta's than to the ones you get. You're right though, there is way too much pink and fridges don't need bows (but then I don't think they need the internet either).

    1. LOL, Carrickters! The first time I saw a fridge with water and a ice maker on the outside I was in awe. It's no wonder that Barbie is up on all the latest electronic wizardry.

  13. That's not a bad price for the LIV set considering one of their outfits typically retailed for $9.99. I would have bought that set. Their fashions are better than the 3 pack Barbie fashions. I am still kicking myself for not buying that FIAT when it was half that price on line. I played Angry Birds for the first time yesterday. I'm not sure I'm a complete fan, but I would now consider buying the doll if the price were right. Maybe we should all push for Mattel to bring out a line of clothes for Ken. It would probably be blue, but I could live with that.

    1. Vanessa, I don't think I've paid more than $5 for any Liv clothing packs so you know it would hurt my heart to pay $11 now.

I can't believe that there is a car that you don't have! I remember the parking lot scene from the wedding videos and it seemed like you had enough to fill a mall.

    2. I haven't found that car for $5 yet, which is why I don't have it. The red Coup is the only car I've paid retail price for. All the rest are thrift store or cheap ebay finds. Even Darius' red sports car was less than $7. But I like that Fiat enough to pay $20 or less. Definitely not $40!

  14. Not a fan of all the pink, bows, hearts and pink. Did I already say pink? Hmmm... well, I admit my eyes are glued to the fiat. If only I could figure out a way to paint the seats. Thanks for so many cute, fun photos for us to pour over, Muff.

    1. So, what you are saying, Roville, is that you are not a fan of pink, LOL! I have seen some Flickr photos of repainted cars and they look quite nice. They used spray paint for plastics. I have a problem with aerosols so that's why I have to apply anything with a brush but I might give it a try on something like the Fiat.

  16. I would prefer that Fiat without the pink interior, but what would I expect from Mattel? Sigh. I agree that it must be that the little girls in whatever test segment/focus group Mattel uses where hypnotized to say they liked pink -- gaaa-gaa - I think my eyes are suffering from hard candy pink or Pain-teone 77.

Thanks for sharing the stuff you did not get - wisely, too. Cheap = frugal. Frugal = wiser choices when you do buy ;-D

I quite like the Bratz set here and the Angry Birds Barbies are quite cool, too. You made me laugh with that bow comment, it's so, so true.
