What Happened to Cleo?

Q&A with Jawn Pickles! (love that name)

Jawn comments, "I'm really curious what became of your acetone Cleo head and such. I'm debating on shrinking an Ever After High head cuz they're so big but I dunno if the hard/huge amounts of glue in the scalp would affect it terribly or not..."

Jawn, I left Cleo in acetone for 7 straight days. Why? Just wanted to see what would happen really. But, it was rather unnecessary, because she didn't shrink anymore than if I would have left her in for 2 days. Oh well, now I know, lol. Here's what she looks like:

While there was no loss of facial screening, there was a color change. The salmon coloring around her eyes turned to yellow. She also lost her gloss layer, making her eyes and lips matte. I don't mind it, but if anyone does, they can always apply a layer of matte varnish to make them shine again. I'm attributing this shine loss to being in the solution for too long because it only happens slightly when in for 2 days or less. Another effect was that her bangs got longer because her face got smaller.

Here she models her new Fashionista body and the Walgreen's acetone I used. I don't know if it was the cold weather (I had only head shrunk in warm weather before) or because I left her in the solution for so long, but it took 14 days for her head to start to harden and another 10 before it finally shrunk to where it is now. If you want to double dip I'd wait until the hardening starts. You should also rinse out any glue in the hair before you even start or it will gunk up in the solution.

Comparison to her old body

Bangs to the side. She likes her bigger boobies.

As for Ever After High, I've started that process and round 1 has been completed. I dipped her for 36 hours and her head ballooned up a whole 1/2 inch! After drying for 2 days, so far she has just reduced back to her original size and is as soft and malleable as when I put her in. If she ever starts to harden I'll give her a round 2 and see what happens. This one might take a looooong while.

Any other questions, let me know. Good luck to you!

  2. Thank you so much for these images! I've acetone shrunk a Lagoona head using pure acetone and it seems like it has shrunk down to the same size difference as your cleos. i've noticed in a lot of acetone shrinkings that red pigments tend to fade faster than others so yeah heh.
I also tried to shrink a My Scene head using nail polish remover but she only shrunk back to her original size and remained as soft as ever even after a month of waiting for any difference so I grew impatient and chucked it into pure acetone for about three hours, where the acetone tore her scalp off. She finally shrunk down by a small percentage but became completely hard so there's that to consider too.
I've written a bit about it on my Tumblr here:

Good luck with shrinking down Cerise's balloon head

    1. Hi again, Jawn. I don't use pure acetone for shrinking. I gave it a try but didn't like the [ results]. I do have a few My Scene ladies but haven't attempted to shrink them down and don't know if I will. I do like having dolls of varying head sizes, even if sometimes I just want to shrink something to see what happens, lol.

Thanks for those link! I enjoyed visiting your dedicated tumblr. and I LOVED your Monster High repaint tutorial! I'm going to use that in the future.

    2. Yeah I can understand your stance on pure acetone but I can't find more than tiny bottles of nail polish remover so I just buy a large bottle of acetone heh. I mostly wanted to have a tiny version of the MS girls for a long while so it's just a bit of wish fulfilment haha.

Thank you so much! I've been meaning to make my own doll blog again for quite some time and unsure of how well it'll work out so this means a bunch to me haha (I've been following this blog since you've posted about that Nie Feng Action figure). I am glad that my MH face up tutorial is helpful to you and can't wait to see your results :D

  5. Hello from Spain: I like the new head on the fashionista body. Wow wow ... great idea. You're very creative and innovative. I love her hair aside. She is best in this new body. Keep in touch

    1. Marta, even though her hair is pretty short, a lot can still be done with it. They did a good job on it.

  6. Thanks for sharing what happened to your Cleo after her 7-day immersion in acetone. She looks great. Better than any spa treatment, lol.

Something I have wondered with shrinking doll heads - does that affect the size of the neck opening? Thanks again - and LOVE your clear photos.

    1. Thanks, Dana and yep the shrinking is overall. That's why once you put the head on a body and it dries, you wont be getting it off again. You can still move the dolls neck around as usual though, it's just a tight fit.

    2. Actually if you heat it up with boiling water or a hairdryer the plastic becomes soft enough to remove from bodies and such.

    3. Jawn, I've heard people say that about using boiled heat or a hair dryer to resoften but I've never tried it. I've already stressed the vinyl out enough as it is. I guess I'm too chicken to then apply heat in case it gets a crack or something.

    4. Dear Muff and Jawn Pickles: Thanks for confirming that the neck attachment shrinks as well. Good to know that.the plastic can remain somewhat malleable. Slow as I am to re-body DAFs though I'd probably leave the head on the new body unless the match was a complete mismatch ;-)

  7. She looks like a sassy men eater! Awesome! I have a question, but it's not about shrink. I want to swap a Twist Around Head, from its stiff body to a articulated body that had a Twist Around Head too, but I don't know how, the head pops out every time

  9. So I'd been refusing Cleo because she's such a bitch-character (yeah I don't know why it matters to me either, but it does :) ) but the shrunk head on the fashionista body is GORGEOUS. I'd already been tooling around with some reroots and repaints but this is a new level of beauty I'm curious to try!

    1. Tina, it's probably shameful of me to admit this, but I don't watch the webisodes of the Monster High series. I saw the one where Clawdeen went to Paris, oh, pardon me, Scaris, lol, but that's it. So, I'm not all that clear on what their personalities are. So far I've only collected Clawdeen and now Cleo. I do have a Abbey, but I found her at the thrift store but have no plans for her yet.

Even without a head shrink, MH heads really look nice on Fashionista bodies.

  10. Wow! I had no idea you could do that! I really don't like it when dolls have oversized heads! Yours came out great!

  14. How did you put the trousers on a Fashionista body? I have that same outfit and and it doesn't close on standard Barbie bodies.

    1. BlackKitty, I have never had any problems putting the Barbie Basics jeans on a Fashionista body. Sure they gap open when you sit them down, but standing up they close just fine. Maybe yours were just super duper tight?

    2. You're right! The left leg is a couple millimetres narrower in the hip and thigh area. What a bummer. Well, looks like I'll have a sewing project on my head. Sorry for bothering you with this trifle!
