Well, well, well, what have we here?
Saw this new set at Walmart.
The prototype Barbie on the back is gorgeous and has a distinguished cupids bow.
The real one though looks, uh, a tad different. Her lip paint got jacked up too.
I know it wouldn't be durable at all, but for once I'd like them to issue one of these hats as cloth or paper.
But I doubt that would ever happen considering they keep issuing these faux outfits. From a distance they look okay but close up they look so sad.
Both dolls have flat feet with the chef rocking some Crocs and the waiter in nice dress shoes.
Apparently you are dining alone because there is only 1 plate in this set! Now that's stingy.

Not only is there only one plate in the set, but there's not really any food! A bowl with a sticker on top to look like tomato soup or whatever just seems lame. And is the "tomato soup" in the big pot actually cardboard, or plastic? At least neither doll is wearing spike heels.
ReplyDeleteI have to presume the plastic hats and faux outfits are for kids like my niece who is super hard on her toys. I cringed when I stayed with my sister-in-law last October and saw Barbie dolls left out on the back patio in the rain for days.
Barb, the top of the soup in the pot looked plastic in person, but it could be a shiny piece of paper also.
DeleteI know it would have to be a pink or black label before they would even think of issuing a proper chefs hat but I don't see that happening.
*tsk* These printed-on outfits... I've seen a couple that actually still worked nice visually after being put on the doll, but these just look sad. :(
ReplyDeletePresto, I will say that even though faux, they've added a lot of graphic detail that would be too expensive for them to really produce. That's the only saving grace actually.
DeleteHmmm ... should the blonde head be on the brunette's body? The chef has a tiny head while the waitress has a fuller head. I hope there are dolls with neater lip lines: I had been thinking the blonde could be my LA Girl without the side flocking. Shrug. We'll see.
ReplyDeleteI like the shoes.
Thanks for sharing!
D7ana, those heads are super disproportionate in the photo, but they really didn't look that different in person. I'm assuming they made the chef's head look smaller because her hat is so dang big.
DeleteLOL ... oh, that hat. My Mom saw it on the petite Chef Barbie and asked why Barbie was wearing a bucket on her head. Sigh. That's the one time they should have made the accessory paper if they weren't going to do fabric.
DeleteThe dolls are cute though. Thanks for clearing up about the head proportions ;-)
Thanks for sharing! I haven't seen these anywhere yet, but I will probably pass for now. I have been getting some of the new Fashionistas, though and have been pleasantly surprised so far! No glue in the heads and the clothes are pretty decent!
ReplyDeletePhyllis, my Walmart doesn't have any of the new Fashionistas! I keep checking and they still have the ones from two releases ago. *grumble grumble grumble*
DeleteAwww! It looked so good from a distance. Still, a blonde with brown eyes!?! Is that a first? And another curvy? Not bad.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your pictures:-)
Maricha, that distance trickery is what drew me to it. It looked like it was full of stuff and a complete set. Disappointment quickly ensued.
DeleteI'm not a huge fan of blonde dolls so I never noticed their eye color. I don't notice eye color in general I don't think, lol. I take that back. It always bugged me that So In Style Chandra had yellow eyes.
I saw it today. Mattel could have atleast put 2 servings of food in there. That is just cheap! They put two dolls in the same box with one plate of food and ask for $24. Really Mattel?? I like the curvy girls, but I will wait for this one to go on clearance.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia Girl! Did you guys have a good doll show? Did you post pictures anywhere???
DeleteLOL, Mattel didn't even give you a spoon. You'll have to drink that soup straight from the bowl unless the chef is going to lend you her ladle.
I like the set, as I have wanted to do a diner with curvy girls but that price with no cooking accessories is just too much. I could probably make cuter chef outfits and aprons than that printed faux stuff. There isn't even a table or two plates of faux food. But the shoes on the dolls are cute and they themselves are cute. Will wait for clearance thanks for posting this!
ReplyDeleteLisa, if you tried to open a diner with those outfits I don't think you would get many customers. Unless it's one of those drive ins where people don't see the service staff. I do appreciate the shoe details though.
DeleteThis is a cute set! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Roxanne!
DeleteI saw this set in Walmart on Sunday and I pretty much came to the same conclusions you did, lol. My 4 yr old barely looked at it an moved on to the Fairytopia line. At first I thought they looked like really nice dolls, but ended up being so disappointed by the lack of quality!
ReplyDeleteFarrah Lily, if this set was $10 I wouldn't say boo about it and probably would have purchased it. That's the value I see for this set. Those are not $25 outfits.
DeleteIt's funny, I bought a doll off ebay recently (of all things a now 17 year old(!) Aaron Carter figure as he has a really nice face and insanely good articulation!) and was so impressed by the quality of his clothes - nicely scaled stitching, actual pockets and collars and none of this horrible plasticky printed-on-detail nonsense that has been plaguing Barbie and co recently. I LOVE that they've diversified the range in terms of articulation and body type, with new faces and hairstyles too, but I can't help feeling that they've had to cut back on the clothing quality to account for it which is a real shame.
ReplyDeleteLast Alliance, that's some solid reasoning. I could see them cutting costs where they can to introduce the new bodies. However, I also think that because LIV is gone and Bratz aren't doing much, they don't have that much competition clothing quality wise to keep them on their toes.
DeleteI laughed out loud at your comment to GG about the spoon and ladle. I find the most disappointing thing to be the missed opportunity to create a really cool playset. This idea had a lot of potential but the cheap clothes and limited accessories are a let down. And that price is a joke.
ReplyDeleteJewell, Mattel is full of ideas and potential. It's the execution of them that seem suspect.
DeleteThat's... full of good intentions? If I didn't know it was official Mattel, I'd assume it was one of the better Lovely Patsy knock-offs. (If Lovely Patsy made Curvy dolls, I'd have one by now.)
ReplyDeleteHiya, Smaller! Wow it looks like a knock off? Is this what Mattel has come to? Looking as fake as the people who copy them. That's a sad state of affairs.
DeleteThese clothes that's the reason why i sew for dolls myself. I hate those painted details. However the shoes look nice.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya, Natalia! If I could stand sewing I'd make my own too.
DeleteHey Muff! The waitress also looks to me like the L.A Girl. Well, a watered down version of the L.A. Girl. I think it's great that they add the new bodies to all the lines, not only the Fashionistas, but they should improve the quality.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Monstercrafts, I never did find a single LA Girl in my area so I didn't recognize that this was the same mold.
DeleteHow did I miss this? This is such a cute set. It's a shame about the lipstick.
ReplyDeleteJaye, I've seen some others and the lipstick is fine. The doll still doesn't look like the prototype though.
DeleteHappy 4th of July, Muff!
ReplyDeleteHey there, Maricha!!! It's a hot hot 4th, but at least I got the day off.
DeletePeople hate curvy Barbie's? This is news to me. They are my body goals lol
ReplyDeleteValsays, being a curvy gal myself I like the body type. Not everyone shares that opinion though.
