The Doll Master

I was watching a South Korean horror movie called [The Doll Master] on YouTube.  It's filled with beautiful dolls but gory and scary so don't click if that stuff bothers you.  In it there is this gorgeous built-in display for ball jointed dolls:

It's magnificent. Can you imagine being able to display your dolls like this? It makes me feel all tingly inside.  If you want to see it in the video it's from 10:00 - 11:30 and 16:18 - 17:02.  Don't worry, nothing nasty happens in between those time frames. *looks away shiftily*

To me this custom piece is perfection personified. I would love to view my boxed dolls like this.  To be able to see them proudly displayed in all their packaged glory.  Instead they look like this:

Sigh. Don't get me wrong.  I think they are fine like this.  It's orderly.  I can see what's what.  Easy peasy.  Although, there have been times I couldn't remember if I purchased a particular doll version while I'm in the store.  I inspect so many dolls over and over it gets hard to remember if I bought one, you know?  I have since solved that dilemma by keeping a photo on my phone of every boxed doll. ^_^

Anywho, this is cool, but it's no awesome custom display. So I started thinking. "Hmm. How can I build something like that?" *strokes chin thoughtfully*  Then I realized I couldn't because I'm out of wall space. Double sigh.  HOWEVER! I do have some tall bookcases so I can at least see, if only for a moment, what such a thing might look like!

This is the wall of tall bookcases in my home office. The shelves are pretty deep and because no way am I moving all these items, I'm just going to push it all backwards and stuff the boxed dolls in the space available.  So, 1, 2, 3, tada!:

OMG, I kinda hate it. It's too much and it's not cute at all.  I think the problem is the lack of space between the dolls.  When I tried to space them out you could see all the junk behind them and it got messy looking. I mean, it was nice to see all my boxies out if even for a minute, but meh.  Oh, well, now I can have one photo record on my phone instead of dozens.

Regardless of this failure, thanks to The Doll Master I'll always have a wonderful memory of what could be possible with enough space.  One day, people.  One day.

  1. Thanks for sharing the still shots of the beautiful and orderly doll display from the Doll Master. I would love to have enough space to create a similar display.

I enjoyed seeing your short-lived display idea, which works for me, but I understand how it might not be appealing to some.

Both should give others display ideas.

    1. DBG, if I had taken everything off the shelves first it might have been better and I could have angled boxes and been more creative with my spacing. For a test run though, it still gave me quests for the future.

I watch a lot of home and garden shows and every once in a while they'll show someone with a craft room. I would love something like. I would make mine half display, half work room. That would be major!

  2. I love the look of the DM's display. I would need to get rid of a lot of stuff for that to work. I have a master display plan in mind. I have some boxed dolls on shelves like you did. There was nothing behind them so I am able to stack the dolls like a toy store would.

I am a HGTV nut and have to get one plan together for everything. I need a storage plan too :O)

  4. Great post! I think it looks fun, like a little doll shop. But I could imagine that all those dolls and colors make you dizzy xD
At least that one picture comes in handy when searching for dolls in stores :)

    1. Hi, Tali! Yeah the different colors in the package backgrounds are super busy when there is no space between them.

    1. Jay, I think I'm in collector mode with some of these dolls because I feel quite content to just leave them in their boxes. I'm even doing the same with some of the accessories as they are still in their packages too. 0_o

  7. Nice displays Muff! I see nothing wrong with your display. It is very orderly. I am still in the process of getting mine organized. It is hard to get organized with having so many dolls. Please share with what you ome up with as final result.

    1. Thanks, Georgia Girl! I'm all about the order. I get itchy if things are just so. I'll be sure to post any solutions I come up with.

  8. Thanks for sharing all the display photos. I LOVE seeing dolls photographed; always fun to see what other collector-enthusiasts have. The Doll Master photos are cool, but seeing which dolls you have where, that's fun too.

Funny thing ... I was thinking about displays, too. Mine looks as if a doll mine blew up, lol. Your photos will inspire me to bring more order to my lot.

    1. Hello Spain, Merry Christmas from Florida! Marta, when I first started collecting I always took the doll out the box and quite enjoyed the whole removal process. As the dolls took up more space I just left them in the box.

  10. I love horror movies, so thanks for the recommendation!! I'm a deboxer, so I have only a few boxes on my doll shelves, I usually prefer getting them out and watching them in detail. However, my shelves are quite crowded, I'd love to have something like in the film.
I also take the chance here to wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013!

  11. DM was nice, but too spaced out for me. I liked yours, too. I did feel like I was looking at a toy store shelf, though. LOL. I saw my inspirational doll room yesterday. It belongs to Rebecca. You may have seen it, but if not, here is a link. http://insidethefashiondollstudio.com/2012/12/23/seasons-greetings-from-itfds/

  12. It would be a dream have a displayer like that in DM, but I'd like to have a display space like yours, my dolls, boxed and deboxed, are all locked in my closet and hidden in a secret place far from my home.
    Yes, one day.
    Merry Christmas Muff :)
