What's New at TRU

Robotica posted that she found the Tonner City Girls at Toys R Us so I headed over there this weekend to see if my store was carrying them. They aren't yet, but here are a few of the many new items they have in stock:

Deuce & Gil $34.99

I don't have a single male Monster High character. I've never seen one at the thrift shop and they're really hard to find in stores. Let me rephrase that. They are really hard to find on clearance. I would like this set more for their clothes and accessories than for the dolls themselves. So, unless it drops to $19.99 or lower, I won't be getting it.

Malibu Ave. Sets $34.99

Hmm. These do not look as cute as they did in the promo photos. Maybe it's because they are surrounded by shiny packaging and busy backgrounds, but in person, they come across as cheap, tacky and very garish. The little accessories such as people food and pet items do look nice and durable. Another set I'll be waiting to clearance.

Moxie Girlz Ice Cream Bike $34.99

Very nice! I am quite impressed with this. Not $35 impressed, but still. I've always wanted a street market diorama and this would fit perfectly in it. There was no button to press so you could hear the song it plays but I'm assuming it's the usual ice cream tune.

Moxie Girlz Baker(2) & Painter $19.99

More cool sets! The backgrounds in these make it seem like you are getting more accessories than you are. For instance, the cabinets in the baker sets are just a paper graphic stuck onto a shaped piece of plastic. The Painter version doesn't seem as dynamic as the Baker girls because it looks like all you do is change the color of the paper. You also only get 5 accessories and the others have 10.

This is the last week for the TRU clearance blast and everything is at 90% off; not that there is much left. I hope that a sale like this will be an annual event because even though I bought an obscene amount of stuff, you couldn't beat those prices.

    1. Hi, Miranda! Robotica didn't say if she had a coupon when she got her City Girl, so I hope $15 is their regular price.

    1. My pleasure, AG! The Moxie people are turning up their game. From Poopsy Pets to full play sets, lol, they are versatile.

  3. Wow! Thanks for posting these Muff! While I still think the circus is in town, I have to say the Barbie playsets look nice in person. I may have to reconsider. I LOVE the ice cream bike set. My daughter would love it! Guess I can start my Christmas list early this year. :-)

    1. LOL, Tracy! Those Malibu sets are crazy in color overload but I think taking them out of the packaging will settle down some of that garishness.

I really hope that some one buys that ice cream bike and does a video on it so I can see it in motion. I checked on YouTube but they must be very new because there is nothing there about it.

  4. When/if these grocery and bakery sets hit Big Lots at a steep discount, I suppose I shall have to find more space for playscale civilization, as the temptation to take a can of neutral spray paint to the furnishings will be undeniable. All that scrolly stuff will look fabulous as wrought iron.

Those Moxie Girl accessories are drool-worthy...

    1. Hi, Smaller Places! You know, my Big Lots toy section has been horrible lately. They have a very limited selection and the prices are not low at all. Maybe they will beef up when Christmas season comes but where I used to turn to them for low priced toys, I'm now going to Tuesday Morning.

  5. Cool! I see a bunch of stuff that I'd like to have, but none that I would like to pay full price for. :) Thanks for the info!

  6. Hello from Spain: I like Bakery of Barbie. In my country still is not for sale. I'll buy it and I'll paint more realistic colors. Lovely ice cream bike. Great furniture Moxie. I need to go to the shops in your city. Fabulous news. Keep in touch

    1. Greetings from Florida, Marta! These have only been released in the last week so no telling how long before they will be making their way to your country.

  7. Thanks for sharing these! That bike is fabulous - lots of potential to do different things with that. And I love those cake and cupcake sets.

I'm glad to see another release of MH boys. I'm not a huge collector of them myself, but I know a lot of people who are, and the relative rarity of the boy dolls seems to have driven the prices up ridiculously - it's nice to know that there are more of them available at retail prices (at least for a little while).

    1. jSarie, I like this MH boy set because their clothes look like something I would put on my girls and I like their game board and consoles. But, I'm rather plebeian when it comes to my monster tastes so I don't want either of these guys. They are a bit "out there" for my liking. Maybe if I watched the episodes I would have more of an affinity for the characters.

  8. I wish that they would just sell the sets without the dolls. I don't need any more dolls, especially without articulation. The same thing for the clothes. They could sell them for a more reasonable price and I think they could put more quality in the accessories. They would sell a lot more of them that way.

    1. Phyllis, I totally get what you are saying but sometimes it's a catch 22 for me. I want a lower priced set and you can get that if there's no doll. However, sometimes a doll is wearing a pretty nice outfit that I want so it seems worth it. Take the Moxie Baker sets - I LOVE what they are wearing. So even though I would chuck the dolls, those outfits are keepers.

    2. Phyllis, all three Malibu sets are available sans dolls from BarbieCollector.com for $24.99. I ordered the bakery set for my daughter. I almost got the pet boutique but changed my mind at the last minute. That one seems pretty popular as it has already sold out once. And like Muff, I plan to donate the doll from the Moxie set and keep her cute clothes and accessories.

  9. Hi Muff! The Monster Guys set is cute, but I'm not crazy about their faces. Gil seems to have an elongated head. The Barbie sets look less promising, but thanks for sharing the news about the Moxie Girlz ice cream bike and bakeries. I look forward to seeing them go on sale ;-)

    1. D7ana! ^_^ On the box graphic Gil seems to have a long head so maybe his doll head is actually elongated. I know that they have different molds for the characters, so it seems reasonable that they would actually to that to him.

  10. I like the Moxie sets much, MUCH more than the Barbie ones! (Like you, not enough to pay full price, but they are very nicely done!)

    1. Evening, Presto! Yes, the Moxie sets are better in my opinion. Even though both companies products contain pink, it's not as obnoxious in the Moxie sets. The Moxie items also appear to be better quality wise compared to what Mattel is offering.

  11. Thanks for sharing! I visited TRU today and saw the pet boutique and the Moxie sets. That ice cream bike is cool. And I really want that cake in the baker set. I will be watching for sale prices. I was underwhelmed by the pet boutique in person. The pets are toonish, and you're right, the whole set is a bit garish. I already bought the bakery set a month ago from BC.com as a Christmas gift for my daughter, though.

    1. Jewell, I have no doubt that I will be getting the Malibu Market when it goes on sale, but I would want at least 70% off before I would get the other two. Pet stores are real turn offs for me, but I guess I could make it a Humane Society Shelter instead of a Boutique.

  12. I wish you could buy the Monster High boys on their own and they were more available. They always seem to be part of a set (and so more expensive) and not released very often. At first I thought it was just the toy stores in Australia weren't stocking them but obvously it has more to do with Mattel. Really like the icecream cart however.

    1. Carrickters, it's as though scalpers buy out the males as soon as they are released and then sell them for the most ridiculous prices ever. I wanted a Clawd doll and he is over $100 on Amazon.

  13. I LOVE the ice cream bike! I need to search for a better price. I prefer the Moxie sets to the Barbie sets. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Vanessa, if you find the ice cream bike cheaper please let us know. I've got a bad feeling that those bikes are going to be scooped up and scalped for higher prices.

  14. Hey Muff. Thanks for the shoutout. I really like the ice cream bike and Barbie sets. As soon as they go on sale, I'll get one. You reminded me that I have to go back to ToysRUs to see what's been marked down now.

    1. Robotica, TRU still has a few clearance items left. Those One Direction dolls are still hanging around. I always forget about TRU online and I know they have clearance stuff there too, but you have to pay shipping, bleh.

  15. Those Moxie sets are pretty sweet. I wish Mattel would get a clue, but pink, glittery and tacky seems to be their default.

    1. Valsays, I missed the era when Mattel did some neutral sets. Guess pink and purple is all they care about now.
