Christmas in October and a Hurricane

Tis the season!

My family and I made out okay during the hurricane that hit Florida last Friday with minimal damage and only a few annoyances. However, it looked like a lumberjack convention was held at my apartment complex. I still love living in Florida though.

  1. Ouch. I'm happy to hear it wasn't too serious for you.

    1. Thanks, BlackKitty. 5 days later and there are still some areas without power so we were very lucky.

  2. Hello Muff! I'm happy to hear that you're safe.
Here the stores don't have Christmas ornaments yet, but supermarkets already have Christmas sweets. I don't have a Walmart here, but I'm sure other stores migh have doll size Christmas stuff. The purple poodle was a little bit weird, but the red chair was cute. I love your nails, by the way!

    1. Christmas sweets, Monstercrafts? I don't think I've ever gone down the supermarket candy isle, so I'm not sure if we have candy specifically for Christmas. I know we do for Easter because there are always commercials about it. I'll have to check and see if we have that!

Thanks! I've just gotten into painting my nails and it's actually quite relaxing.

    2. Maybe "sweets" isn't the most accurate word. Usually in Spain after lunch or diner in Christmas people eat some sort of sweet products that are eaten traditionally in Christmas. One of the most popular ones is "turron" which looks like a bar (thicker than a chocolate bar) and the main ingredient are almonds. If you are curious on Christmas I'll take a picture.

    3. Our local World Market store has a section full of sweets and snacks in Christmas packaging. I'm not sure how much of it is specifically for Christmas and how much of it is marketed for Christmas.

That Turron sounds like stuff that my Italian in-laws eat.

    4. It wouldn't surprise me if italians had something similar, as some spanish and italians traditions have many points in common. I don't think there's a translation for the spanish Christmas sweets, and I don't really know how to explain them, but if you guys are curious, I'll take a picture and post it on my blog.

You make a great point about "marketed for Christmas". A regular chocolate box can be a Christmas thing with a Santa drawn on the lid righ?

    5. Monster, our traditional "sweets" for Christmas would be eggnog and fruitcake, both of which are disgusting to me, lol. I'll stick with sweet potato pie that I can have year round and is delicious.

I'd like to see pics of your and Barb's traditional holiday goodies.

  4. I am glad you and your family survived Matthew. Those pictures of the destruction at your complex illustrate the force and power behind the winds. Wouldn't want to have been there.

I enjoyed the Christmas in October diorama suggestions, even though I don't create them. I have used the wrapped package ornaments for dolls to hold and/or to place under a mini tree used as a table-top tree since I rarely put up large trees.

    1. Thank you, Debbie. So many people don't pay attention to the wind advisory and end up with crushed cars.

The little mini presents really are a good size for dolls to hold.

  5. I am glad that you and your family are okay.

I have not seen as much in my Walmart. I love the miniature trees. Very cute! Great video as always!

    1. Thanks, Georgia Girl! My Walmart is almost finished putting up their Holiday stuff. Black Friday will be here before you know it.

  6. I'm glad the hurricane didn't cause too much destruction for you personally! Those fallen trees are still pretty scary to see though!

  7. I'm glad you and your loved ones are OK. Seeing those big trees uprooted shows just how serious this was.
That idea of using a Christmas ornament as a chandelier is excellent. I hope I can find some of those windows, they're lovely.

    1. Maricha, thanks! They had a few ornaments that could double as chandeliers but that crystal looking one was my favorite.

  8. Glad you're okay! Wow, the toppled trees are scary. I bet that was nerve-wracking to experience.

Wow, I'm a little astonished at the number of tree-shaped ornaments this year. Is that a thing, now? Hanging trees on your tree? (Treeception?) I really want to grab one of those sleds from the rustic collection this year. I held out hoping for a clearance deal last year and I think those were one of the first things to go! :(

    1. Presto, it's always unsettling to listen to trees drop and worrying if the next one is going to crush you and your property. The one that fell right behind my patio sounded like a big boom and shook my apt.

LOL, "Hanging trees on your tree." I really didn't think of it that way. I see everything as a potential for doll use, not what regular people will be doing with them.

  9. That hurricane was certainly rough. I'm glad you and your family are okay.

Walmart hasn't even finished pushing the Halloween items and they are already stocking Christmas. It's too fast.

    1. Thanks, Jaye! I went down the Halloween isle but nothing was doll sized. Sometimes Dollar Tree has a few Halloween things that will work with dolls.

  10. I'm so happy to hear y'all are okay. You were on my mind when I was following the storm coverage. Even my daughter sat up and listened when she heard Jacksonville Beach mentioned. I need to get out and peruse the holiday stuff. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks, Jewell! I'm about 45 minutes from the beach but I do live next to a river. Luckily it only rose a few feet so I didn't get much flooding.

  11. Good to know that you got through the hurricane okay. Thanks for the Walmart tips. I can't imagine being ready to think about Christmas yet though!

    1. Barb, my family is not Christmas oriented so I never got big into shopping for it. But once I became interested in dolls and dios, Christmas sales came on my radar.

  12. I'm so glad to hear you survived the hurricane with minimal damage. I was wondering whether you were affected. It made the news here in Australia but that same weekend the state I live in also suffered damaging winds (not a hurricane). The areas around us were the worst hit, many people were without power for up to a week and one lady died when a tree fell on her house so we didn't get much follow-up about your hurricane.

    1. Thanks so much, Carrickters and sorry to hear of the same happening in your area. These winds are no joke!
