Here's a story on Yahoo about the new Game Developer Barbie. Yahoo links disappear quickly so I'll post the Mattel photos in case the article shifts. Don't read the comment section if you are sensitive. It's full of pervs and aholes.
I like everything about this doll, well, except for the no articulation. The ICB Computer Engineer they released had articulated arms and wrists and it would have made sense to do the same with this one, but Mattel is gonna do what Mattel is gonna do. It would be awesome if the AA version had a big ol' fro or double afro puffs! But... it will probably be straight haired Nikki again.
I got this doll too! I also really like her. Of course, I immediately gave her one of the Made to Move Barbie bodies I have. I did go to the Yahoo link you shared and read the article. Once again, I think too much is written into having Barbie as a role model. I love my Barbie and other fashion dolls. I grew up with her and never felt she had to be my role model for that. I had parents and teachers and other adults for role models. I just loved the endless hours of play my sisters and I had playing with our Barbies (and Ken) dolls.
ReplyDeleteMy eldest daughter is going to college at Kendall School of Art and Design. Her major is Digital Media and Design. She already is very talented in this arena. Her focus is on storyboarding and animation. I fully expect that we will see her name in the credits of some animated movie in the future! Because of my influence she played with Barbies a lot when she was young. We played with them together. To her, it didn't matter how Mattel marketed a doll to be in a certain role. Her dolls were who she imagined them to be, not what Mattel or anybody else told her that her dolls were!
Phyllis, I do agree that Barbie takes a lot of crap for not being an attainable image. Sure parents would like for their kids to have dolls that represent them to assist with self worth, but Barbie cant be all things to all people. Mattel is out to make money, not to be the harbinger of diversity. They will cater to the masses as long as it profits them.
DeleteI also wonder about that debate, my Barbies did it all. Not just whatever Mattel said because my mom bought or made me all sorts of interesting accessories, like a weekly dollytown newspaper. We played together and that made me see a bigger world, with more possibilities than anything any toy company could create. If you can't be bothered to shape your child's understanding of the world or how real people look, don't blame a corporation.

DeleteWell said, Maricha!
Really cool accessories! That would be awesome if she had big curly hair. I would snatch her her in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteGeorgia Girl, I love mini laptops and this one is super cool. Wouldn't have to color it or anything. I'd probably color the headgear though, just to jazz it up.
DeleteI remember reading something about this doll a while back. I think she's cute, especially her outfit and accessories. The role model conversation is tired. I can't.
ReplyDeleteJewell, she looks normal and that's probably why she appeals to me. I would totally wear those cloths and she has glasses. Win win.
DeleteLaleczka jest bardzo ciekawa i ma fajne dodatki! Jej strój - świetny! Chciałabym aby miała artykułowane ciało i kręcone włosy :)))
ReplyDeletePozdrawiam serdecznie!
Lubię dodatki też, Olla. Zwykle zwolnić białą i czarną lalkę, więc będziemy musieli poczekać i zobaczyć, co ten drugi wygląda.
DeleteLike Jewell, I'm tired of the role model conversation. I like this doll and think her accessories are cute. Thanks for sharing ;-)
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, D7ana, I will not engage you in role model talk, lol.
DeleteI would love her with braids not curly hair. Every time they make a Barbie with curly hair it ends up just flopping around in a non descript style. I ended up drying my goddaughter's Barbie afro upside down with super hold gel so it would look fierce instead of sad.
ReplyDeleteMaricha, I don't think I've ever had a curly haired Barbie lose it's curl. I have found some where the curl has been combed out of it or it's seriously matted, but not one that just flopped on its own. I wonder if it was because of glue seepage?
DeleteI'm not sure what it was, but the main culprit seems to be this weird slimey texture their "gel" has that was pulling the style out.
DeleteI ended up cleaning off that doll's Mattel gel with one of those Goop Removing products, followed it up with several shampooings to remove that chemical's smell, then scrunched the hair with strong hold human gel and dried her upside down to keep the volume in place. The curl was still there, the hair just looked floppy and ragged because of their styling product.
I had the same problem a few years ago but I didn't know about Goop Remover so I pulled the head off and soaked it in oil for a few days, which also worked but by then I was so fed up that I just did twists all over before giving her back to my little cousin.
I must say, I didn't understand back then that hot water could alter doll hair so I may have stretched it out when I first tried to wash that junk out.
I like this doll, specially her hair colour and her glasses, however, I think that lately they're using that head mold too much. I also apreciate the fact they didn't give her a pink laptop or pink accesories.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
MonsterCrafts, I'm going to admit that I didn't even really notice the dolls face, lol. I just saw hair, clothes and accessories.
DeleteI want the I Pad...
ReplyDeleteSeergio, it is pretty sweet.
DeleteI just want those accessories. I also have to say that Barbie just gets picked on for role model silliness. So I guess GI Joe was created to send a subliminal message that all little boys should join the armed forces, not have a woman and no kids. At least Barbie babysits and has some (cough) sisters (can't give her any children per se).
ReplyDeleteJanainah, boy toys don't seem to have the same values shoved upon them that girl toys do. "Boys will be boys" and no further development than that appears to be required. In fact, let a boy play with a Barbie and OH NOES call the testosterone police, 'cause apparently that's not okay. Pfft.
DeleteWell,interesting.... It's too bad she isn't articulated. Like that she could be posed using her tech toys. The laptop looks like the same one that came with one of my Barbies a few years ago. Wish Mattel had redesigned it to something thinner, more modern. At the end of the day, I don't see how this encourages a little girl to think of a career in computer science. But then again, Barbie has had 150 other careers so why not.
ReplyDeleteApril, then I must have an old clunky laptop, because mine looks like the Mattel version. I wouldn't mind a thinner, more modern one myself, lol.
DeleteOoooh, love this because I was a computer engineer haha and I so can relate to this get-up! Yes, an articulated body would have been nicer but I think she matches easily among the existing articulated skin tones. xoxo, shasha
ReplyDeleteShasha, true she can just be rebodied, but it would be nice to not have to do that so often.
DeleteNot surprised about the comments section. Actually, I'm more surprised at the lack of similar outrage at Monster High Kjersti Trollson, who is supposed to be a gamer girl. Of course, Barbie is a household name.
ReplyDeleteI'm not very interested in the doll, but I do like the accessories. I still don't have a doll-size laptop! Also, you can never have too many 1/6 scale hipster glasses.
Anderson, I guess no one expects much from monsters. LOL @ hipster glasses.
DeleteI never thought Mattel would release a Game Developer! This is so awesome! I've been going to college to become one! :D
ReplyDeleteLeandra, then she's the perfect doll for you to get to customize to your likeness! ^__^
DeleteIf i get her i might only repaint the eyes blue. I have the same olive skin tone and the brown/red hair. ^u^
Deletezakochałam się!!!
ReplyDeletemam 2 niunie z tą twarzą - Ona
się mi chyba nigdy nie znudzi!
